Their Royal Highnesses celebrated the 50th anniversary of Sir Edmund Hilary’s ascent of Mount Everest by commissioning a limited-edition silver medal of only 20 to commemorate the event. Prince Paul sponsored a team of Romanian mountaineers to attempt to repeat Sir Hilary’s feat and traveled to Nepal, where he met with Sir Edmund, the King of Nepal, as well as the Crown Prince and his wife. A reception was then held at the Royal Geographical Society in London, and Prince Paul presented the medal from his foundation to Sir Hilary, the Crown Prince of Nepal (who had organized the event), and David Neacsu, the leader of the Romanian mountaineering team.

The Royal Academy of Music
Following a payment of £6,000 in support of scholarships at the Royal Academy of Music, the 2008/9 Prince Paul of Romania Scholarship was awarded to Emanuela Buta, a very talented 23 year-old violinist who began her second postgraduate year at the Academy in September 2008.
Emanuela began playing the violin at an early age, participating in local and national competitions from the age of five. She gained her first solo concerto experience with the Arad Philharmonic in Romania at nine years old and has subsequently performed as a soloist in France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Norway, Poland and the UK.
Emanuela Buta flourished at the Academy and made an outstanding contribution to the profession.
Professor Jonathan Freeman-Attwood , Principal at the Royal Academy of Music, wrote to HRH Prince Paul :
« It is clear that you have played a major part in her success here: your offer to extend a hand of support and to provide a cultural lifeline to the homeland of our Romanian students is a major asset to us. Thank you again.
We are, of course, delighted that such talent is coming through from Romania. The scholarship that you provide, your support through the video on your website and your constant efforts to spread the word about the Academy will continue to help us enormously.
It is therefore entirely appropriate that we acknowledge Prince Paul as ‘Ambassador for Romanian students at the Royal Academy of Music’ when referencing the scholarship and support that you give the Academy in developing cultural links with Romania. We would be delighted to establish this in recognition of your help and significant involvement. I do hope that this alliance continues for many years. »
A concert was later organized at the Royal Albert Hall in presence of Sir Elton John in order to finance an organ for the Royal Academy of Music.
